Mars from Earth On 27 August 2003, Mars will be the closest to Earth it has been for 60,000 years, and Japanese, European, and American space agencies are taking advantage of it. You can read about these Mars missions and view photos of the target landing sites on this page, and see a photo of Earth, with Jupiter in the background, taken from Mars here (Earth is the one at the top of the picture, click pic for 1444x4266 pixel enlargement.) Did you know the guy flying Mars is a showoff? He's doing an outside loop for us this year (if you're running at 800×600 screen resolution, scroll all the way right and about ½ way down to get just about all of the maneuver on your screen.) Added Jun 2003.
2003 Iditarod Start 2003 Iditarod Sled Dog Race, March 1st.  3.5 hour recording of TV broadcast of Ceremonial Start in Anchorage, (requires Real/RealOne Player.).  Lots of close-ups of dogs and drivers.  This year's race is most unusual.  The weather in south-central Alaska had been so warm and rainy there was little or no snow on the ground, so the re-start (the official beginning of the race) had to be moved from Wassila, in the Matanuska Valley, to Fairbanks.  Central Alaska had also been warmer than usual.  At least there was snow on the ground and the rivers were still frozen, but the dogs and mushers had to schlog through surface ice melt along most of the course.  To make the race distance long enough, they added a round trip loop to a segment of the course.  Here is the 2003 Trail Map, and the "normal" Trail Map - they take the northern route in even numberd years, and the southern in odd numbered years.
2003 Iditarod Finish March 13. 1 hour TV broadcast of end of the 1,121 mile 2003 race in Nome. Winning time was 9(da):15:47. The winner, Robert Sorlie, and dog team were from Norway. It was only his second time running the Iditarod. His rookie year (2002) he came in 9th at 9(d):13:44.

     Part 1
     Part 2
2002 Iditarod Sled Dog Race, March 2.  2.6 hour recording of TV broadcast of Ceremonial Start in Anchorage (requires Real/RealOne Player.)  Lots of close-ups of dogs and drivers.  High quality larger than usual picture with broadband connection.  Here is the Race Map; they take the northern route in even numberd years, and the southern in odd numbered years.
2002 Iditarod Finish March 12. 1 hour TV broadcast of end of the 1,131 mile 2002 race which was won in the record setting time of 8(days):22:46 by Martin Buser, who finished 24th in 2001.  The line is crossed in the 1st 15 minutes of the movie.  There was a remote controlled mini-cam on the sled so you can watch and hear the dogs runnning and the musher calling commands.  Would you believe in Nome, Alaska, near the Arctic Circle, in the middle of winter – the dogs had to drag a loaded sled up bare pavement to reach the finish line. Mr.Buser, an Alaskan resident since 1979, is an immigrant from Switzerland. He was sworn in as an American citizen at the finish line.
