About This Web Site

General

This World Wide Web site is owned and maintained by a private individual, is general interest, child-safe, and ad-free. See also my Privacy Policy.

The pages are hand-coded, use Cascading Style Sheets, and display successfully, for the most part, in Internet Explorer 4+ and Netscape 4+ browsers. You can adjust the text size to your liking (View menu | Text size.)  Pop-up stoppers will kill some items on this site. If you use one, you're on safe ground here; turn it off.

Hyperlinks to content outside of this site go to sites which are, in my estimation and experience, child-safe and don't steal your e-mail address and spam you. Unfortunately, some do use pop-up/under advertising. I do not, of course, have any control over their privacy policies or practices.

Please use my Contact page for any questions about, or problems you encounter on, this site.

Multimedia Players

For complete access to all items on this site, you will need fairly recent versions of the free "Basic" RealPlayer or RealOne Player, free Apple QuickTime Player, and free Macromedia Flash. All other audio and video items not requiring those specific products play successfully with Windows Media Player.

Java

Your browser must support Java (a programming language) and you must have it enabled in order to run the "Peace & Quite" and "Lady Liberty Fireworks" pages. Of course you also must have Java installed on your computer :-)

On a Windows computer running Internet Explorer, "Lady Liberty Fireworks" may not run well using Sun's Java (on my machine, animations are very jerky.) If you have both Microsoft and Sun versions installed, make sure the Sun version is turned off. In Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab. Look for a "Java (Sun)" heading. Clear the check box for "Use Java ... for <applet>." Under "Microsoft VM" make sure there is a check in the box for "JIT compiler ...." If you had to change either of those check boxes, you must close all Internet Explorer windows in order for them to take affect (you don't need to restart your computer.)

Scripting

Scripting, mostly JavaScript (which has nothing to do with the Java programming language,) is used throughout this site for "user convenience" items such as Refresh Page, Close Window, Return. If your browser does not have Scripting capability, or you have it turned off, just use your browser's Refresh (Reload), Close, and Back buttons or key strokes as usual.

However, there are some item which require Scripting to be enabled. Two examples are on the Home page: the mystery button at the bottom of the left column, and the "Tell A Friend" button. Also on the Home page and throughout the site some links have a JavaScript-controlled light blue "tool tip" that pops up as soon as you point at the link. The tool tips give information helpful to viewing the new page, such as "Press F11" or "Maximize window" and/or explain what the page contains.

Cookies

If your browser, or another program, controls cookies, the small temperature display(s) on some pages may not work. Open the cookie controller and set it to specifically allow "wunderground.com". If they still don't work, then the Weather Underground server is temporarily not functioning. To access cookie control in Internet Explorer 6, click Tools | Internet Options | Privacy tab | Edit button. Enter, without the quotes, "wunderground.com" in the Address field, click Allow, then OK and OK.
